Oral Communication - Teach the Class a Procedure
Dear Parents and Guardians, For our first writing and oral communication assignment, your child will lead the class through a series of steps and teach a procedure. The entire lesson, including having the class do the procedure, should take 5-10 minutes. The explanation should include the goal, materials, and steps. Here are points to remember: · Your child should choose a task that is simple (about 8 steps) and does not require special materials, unless he/she can bring enough materials so that all the class can participate at the same time. Materials that are brought to class should be prepared and organized ahead of time. Your child could put all the materials needed in a baggie for each student. (I can provide scrap paper, scissors, glue, etc.) · Your child should practise teaching the procedure to a family member and he/she should be able to do the task and explain the steps at the same time. He/she should anticipate what steps might be difficult to accomplish and find a way to make the task easy to understand. · The big whiteboard, and blackboard are available. How will visuals be used to explain the steps? You want to avoid having your back to the class. An extra large sheet of paper could be used to show how to fold an airplane so that it's easier for the whole class to see the folds. · The teacher (your child) must speak clearly and confidently and connect with the class, give enough time to complete each step, and scan the class after each step to see if anyone needs help. If a classmate does not understand a step, your child should assist or direct another classmate to help out. Some examples of activities to teach the class are how to . . . · Make a paper airplane · Draw a cartoon character · Do a short dance move or routine Fold origami do a magic trick Play a game Format of the Lesson: a) Explain the goal. b) Connect the goal to a task the class already knows how to do to give an overview and to connect to prior knowledge (This task is like. . . You can draw this picture by using 3 circles of different sizes, etc.). c) Explain the materials. d) Demonstrate the entire task, saying the number of each step, while the class watches. e) Teach the task to the class slowly, step by step and help students who need assistance. Here are the success criteria of the procedure/lesson: · Goal .Materials and quantities · Steps are in a logical order and explained in detail · Pictures or diagrams help to explain the steps · Adjectives or adverbs are used to give additional information (slowly, carefully, for 30 minutes, etc.) · Presentation skills: When teaching, the student speaks clearly and with expression. After each step is demonstrated, enough time is given to complete the step. The student is able to help those who need assistance and knows how to show or explain the step in another way. The student is confident and in control during the lesson and connects to the audience. |
